Virtual Tracks
First, you have to understand the DPS24 way of assigning virtuals.
By default, physical tracks 1-24 are actually virtual tracks 1-24.
First key note- to switch out one track for another (an unrecorded virtual track)
you have to choose an unused virtual track higher than 24. If no spare virtuals
(remember, virtuals 1-24 are spoken for by default for physical tracks even if
you've
not recorded on them yet) have been recorded to yet, start at virtual track 25.
Next key note- spare virtual tracks begin at virtual track 25 and go up to 256.
Practical example-
I have my drums on tracks 1 and 2. I just overdubed my bass to track 3.
I want to record a few more virtual tracks of my bass and pick from the best
one later.
First task, very important-
NAME THE PHYSICAL TRACKS THAT HAVE RECORDED PARTS,
ie- drums left, drums right, bass guitar 1, etc. This will cut down on confusion
when you
start swapping out. You can also name phyisical and v.tracks right in the v.tracks
screen
too.
1- press shift/v.track
2- on the left under the physical tracks column, curser down to
physical track 3 (for this example)
3- now curser left to the virtual tracks column.
Notice that in the physical tracks column track 3 is still highlited by light
grey.
That's indicating that what you're swapping out will end up there.
4- scroll down to virtual track 25. It will now be highlighted.
5-press assign. Physical track 3 (named bass guitar 1) will have now
been swapped with virtual track 25.
6- go to the mixer screen and choose channel view. Select channel 3 (track 3)
and immediately name it "bass guitar 2", or something to that effect.
You're actually naming v.track 25 by doing this, and doing this will help you
avoid
confusion when swapping out later
7- Record away!
8- to switch out for another shot at a bass virtual, go through the process again
and this time choose virtual track 26 for the swap. Continue as discussed.
Now, you have 3 tracks of bass and you want to compare and/or comp.
In this example we want our physical track 3 to be our default virtual- named
bass 1.
Track 4 we'll make bass 2 (virtual track 25) and track 5 bass 3 (virtual track
26).
Now that they are all sittin pretty next to one another, it's just a matter of
muting
either
of them for comparison. If one whole track shows itself to be the winner, than
assign that
track to physical track 3 (where we want our bass track to ultimately be on the
console).
Then when your ready to continue overdubing for other parts on track 4 and 5,
be sure to swap them back to their defaults- virtual tracks 4 and five repsectively.
An easy way to do this is to-
1- shift/v.track
2- under physical track column, scroll down to track 4 (our example)
3- press default. Now the swap should bring back v.track 4- the default track,
and
v.track
25 (bass 2) should have it's rightful place back in the lineup over in
the virtual
track
column.
4- do the same for proceedure to swap out track 5 back to it's defaul, v.track
5.
