Studio Monitoring Foldback

Most users probably don't have a need for the Studio Monitor Foldback.
Usually, the main L/R outputs are fine for studio monitoring as well as for
control room monitoring. The only time you really need a separate studio monitor
is when the performer needs to hear just part of the mix.
The beauty of Studio Monitoring using the FX/Aux 3-4 bus is that you can
create an entirely different mix for the performers than what you hear in the
control room. The Studio mix can be stereo, or you can create two
independent mono mixes to go to separate performers.
----------------------------------------
Foldback and "The Talent"

1) Setup two of your sends (for this case 3 & 4) as a 1xmono.
Go to the mixer screen and into the fx/aux setup

2) Hookup the studio outs of your dps to a headphione distribution system.

3) For every channel (either input or tracks) that you want to place in the
foldback mix, raise the aux 3/4 send. In this configuration, what used to be send #3 is
now a stereo send for 3/4 aux. Also, what used to be send #4 is now a pan
control for placing the send in the stereo field. As always, the fastest way to do all
this is using the q-channel...you'll notice the new functionality when operating the
fx/aux 3&4 rotary encoders while looking at the lcd.
You can of course, strictly just work from the lcd, but the q-channel is really the way
to go for setting up this kind of thing while the players are standing around.

4) For getting fx into the foldback mix, you simply send from the fx page of the
mixer>channel screen of the fx you want to use
(either 1 or 2 or both...since 3 & 4 are being used for the aux send)
out the same aux as all the other audio channels by raising the 3/4 send.
You'll need to change the setting of the aux 3/4 send if it says "off" in the
mixer>channel screen for the fx channel(s) you are using.
Also, don't forget to raise the fx fader for whatever fx(s) you're sending into the foldback mix.

Studio out:

You should have a headphone amp for this.
Route the studio outs from the back of the DPS24 your headphone amp.
Plug your headphones into the amp and monitor from there.
That way, you know that you're set up is working and routed to the right place.

1- go to the mixer page

2- from this page, go to the fx/aux setup page

3- in the fx/aux 3/4 field, set it to 1x stereo

4- just below that the fx/aux 3/4 field will change to combine 3/4 automatically
(stereo) make sure in this field you have it set to "studio L+R"

5- Exit the page. You will notice that you can now push the talkback button
and hear your talkback. Adjust the gain level.
The knob is just to the left of the DPS24 LCD display.

6- Now from the mixer page, go into "channel"

7- Choose a track you wish to set up for the studio out mix by using the
select buttom above any track.

8- Notice that fx 3/4 is now set to "(stul + stur)".
Also, it says "track", as opposed to an input channel. ( if you track direct to track. )
In this case, input channels are NOT routed to L/R. But are monitoring the
input signals from the tracks themselves, so the studio mix consists of the
actual tracks being fed into it, not the input channels.

9- Next, push the q channel button. When you raise fx/aux 3 rotary
encoder, you should get volume in the headphones from the headphone amp.
Fx/aux 3 rotary encoder is the volume control for the studio out mix for any given track.
Fx/aux 4 rotary encoder is for the pan position of the tracks studio out mix.

10- Work through each of your tracks and get them fed to the studio out mix.

You can monitor this mix, as the engineer at the DPS24, by simply pressing the
"studio>CR button right on the DPS24. This "fold back" mix for the talent is a
separte mix from your main monitor mix, so tweaking it won't affect your main mix.

You can even do two mono fold back mixes for two separate talent mixes.

Another related tip:

Using a patchbay, route the "stereo outs" from the deeps to the patchbay.
Route the "two track in" to it as well. When you need an out mix from the
DPS24 for a rough mix for a client or a band practice mix for the band to take home,
just patch the stereo out in the patchbay to a cd recorder/tape deck/ minidisk,
or whatever, that's also in your patchbay. Route the outs from whatever is
capuring the mix via a patch cord into "two track in" in the patchbay.
Press 2-track button on the deeps and monitor the mix!
Having all your two track units in a patchbay is very convienent, and routing
the DPS24 to the patchbay is terrific. One patch cord gets the signal to any recorder.
You can hook up a second set of speakers- home stereo speakers, computer
speakers, etc., to the DPS24 "near field" outs. Now you can mointor and A/B the two
sets of speakers by simply pushing the "near" button on the DPS24.

Also, another feature just given to us in 1.5; is fader flip.
It's especially useful for setting up volumes for the fold back mixes too.

The "monitor" level control affects the headphone volume as does the headphone level control
